Hot Dogs

I've enjoyed hot dogs all my life. I'm finding as I get older that I still like them, except that my taste in which ones I like has changed. When I was younger I liked the regular Oscar Mayer franks or the franks n' cheese. Now, that my tastes have developed and changed over the years I prefer Boars Head, Hebrew National and natural casing franks.

Any and all of these are best when grilled or smoked. A hot dog should never be boiled. Grilled, smoked, broiled or steamed is okay though. The only time I will boil something is after grilling some bratwurst I will put them in a beer bath (beer and onions) to simmer.

Toppings

Mustard is probably the #1 topping for hot dogs. I doubt that any other topping even comes close. But that doesn't rule out many of the others like bar-b-q sauce, pizza sauce, chili, or catsup. Besides these sauces there is a multitude of other toppings that can be added to hot dogs like: relish, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, peppers, or pickles.

Chili Dog: Toasted bun, mustard, hot dog, chili, chopped onion, shredded cheese

Taco Dog: Toasted bun, hot dog, taco meat, lettuce, tomato, salsa

Chicago Dog: Toasted bun, hot dog, pickle, lettuce, tomato, celery salt

Side Dishes

Hot dogs go excellent with tater tots or potato chips. Fries are okay but kind of pedestrian. Macaroni & Cheese is also an excellent side dish.

Grilled or Barbequed hot dogs go well with grilled or steamed corn on the cob.
